It is a fast, secure and reliable platform for application development and widely used for developing Java applications in data centers, laptops, gaming consoles, mobile phones and more. Java platform is a collection of programs that aid developers and programmers to develop and run Java applications seamlessly and efficiently. It is similar to C++ but much more advanced and simplified, it is free to access and can be run on all platforms. It is concurrent where instead of sequentially executing the statements, you can execute many. It follows the logic of “Write Once, Run Anywhere” which means the compiled code can be used and run on all platforms supporting Java.

What is the scope in Java development?

Java is omnipresent, in laptops, in supercomputers, mobile phones and more. It is not only easy to learn but also is designed in a way that is easy to use, write, compile, debug and learn when compared to other programming languages.

The success of Java continues even after 22 years and it also continues to grow in popularity and usage as it is believed to be the most reliable programming language in the community of developers. Skills required to become a Java developer

The Java developers need to gain a competitive in their career and below mentioned are the skills that turn them into a demanded professional –

  1. 1. Basic Java skills

Java developers build various software, from web applications to desktop to mobile apps and cloud systems. The capabilities of Java stretch also to Big Data apps with Python. The following technologies should be considered as a Java developer in your career –

    • Object-oriented programming principles.
    • Relational databases like MySQL, MariaDB and PostgreSQL.
    • Popular version control systems like Bitbucket and Git.
    • Working with an IDE (Integrated Development Environment) like IntelliJ IDEA.
    • Front-end technologies for web like HTML, CSS, jQuery.
  2. 2. Software design and architecture:

In the process of software development, software design and architecture are the most relevant phases. It is a crucial skill for any Java developer to be able to see the true picture and decide on the right technology stack and architecture to implement in the application. You can accelerate your career by learning software architecture as this skill will distinguish you from other developers.

  3. 3. Spring framework 5:

In the year 2020, 2000+ websites used Spring framework to build Java applications. Spring strives to stay away from the tight connectivity when classes depend on other classes and interfaces from this framework and use explanatory notes for this purpose. Spring is based on the MVC framework that has distinct business, operations, business and representation layers. Spring is appreciated by the developers for its elegant syntax, object injection capabilities, simplicity and automation testing tools like Junit 5.

  4. 4. Android + Kotlin

Most of the Java developers start developing mobile applications neglecting the web development phase. The knowledge of Kotlin in developing Android applications help you gain a competitive edge and help in standing out. The Android platform is moving towards Kotlin which is primarily a modified version of Java language.

  5. 5. Unit Testing

As the Java application grows, it comes with more work to maintain and write automated tests including integration tests and unit tests required to launch an application. In Java, the deployment and assembly of any application is not that fast. Here’s when unit testing tools like TestNg and JUnit come into play. These frameworks speed up the writing of automated tests, give immediate feedback on passed tests and offer an easy syntax. JUnit promotes a “testing first” approach that enhances the productivity of the programmer along with stability of the codebase. This reduces the load on the programmer and time spent on debugging.

  6. 6. Principles of SOLID

Object-oriented programming has brought in the latest approaches for application designing. Robert Martin has introduced five principles of Object-oriented programming designed under the acronym SOLID:

    • Single Responsibility Principle: The main idea is that a class should only be responsible for one thing.
    • Open-Closed Principle: Classes, modules and functions should be open for extension but not for modification.
    • Liskov Substitution Principle: Superclasses should be replaced by subclasses.
    • Interface Segregation Principle: Interfaces are designed for a specific client and the client does not depend on interfaces they don’t use.
    • Dependency Inversion Principle: The higher-level modules should not depend on lower-level modules.
  7. 7. DevOps Tools

The knowledge of DevOps is a must among the top Java skills. The Java developer has to be familiar with continuous deployment, continuous integration and Jenkins’s role in both the processes. The senior level Java developers need a strong knowledge of popular DevOps tools like Kubernetes, Maven, Chef, Docker and Jenkins as their responsibilities include implementing coding best practices and creating scripts and manuals.
